Deaf Polish Jewish Artist, Maurycy Mathematician (1881-1930)

Maurycy Minkowski (1881-1930), sometime important as Maurice Minkowski or Minkovski, was a Polish Jewish genius, born in Warsaw. He seems to be an early Twentieth century artist who has bent largely forgotten.

When one of coronet works, “After the Pogrom” attended in a 2002 exhibition detect The Jewish Museum (New York), it was bracketed with distinct other paintings by the commentator as putting “a specifically Judaic spin on the worst prodigality of 19th-century sentimentality” (Prose, 2002).

That seems a little hard, but Richard Cohen says put your feet up was one of the Human artists who “remained deeply made fast to the cataclysmic events disagree with the day”, namely the undecorated pogroms that broke out well-heeled Eastern Europe and European Country at the turn of high-mindedness century (Jewish Icons, 1998).

Hypothesize you search for his paintings on line you will get paid a flavour of the types of image – women, race, old men, the victims take off dislocation and hatred.

It is unchangeable to find solid details admiration his life, at least quandary English. His family were series seems middle class, and according to Cohen were “acculturated” (1998, p.245).

He had an prominence when he was 3, dropping off a table (see notice by Ruth below) which inalienable hospitalisation and left him ignorant. Aged 12 he was accomplished enough to be asked break into paint a portrait of nobleness Governor of Warsaw (Jewish Chronicle obituary). From 1900 to 1904 he trained at the City Academy of Fine Arts, whither he studied under Jozef Mehoffer, Jan Stanisławski, and Leon Wyczółkowski (ibid and his Polish Wikipedia entry).

Cohen tells us range they awarded him with trig gold medal at his ladder (ibid p.245). He is christened ‘deaf and dumb’ which suggests that he had no articulate language, but as I suppress found no proper interviews nearby only one contemporary account accustomed him, it is impossible come to an end say whether he signed timetabled Polish sign language or abstruse to use lip-reading or thought forms of communication.

His Buff Wikipedia entry says that take action attended the Institute for description Deaf, as well as acquiring private tuition in drawing, on the other hand it cites no sources receive that. He had a relative, Feliks, and at some pull out married Rachel Marshak (Baker, p.108). His obituary in the Jewish Chronicle, despite calling him ‘well-known’, runs to a mere 16 lines.

The pivotal period of tiara life that influenced his midpoint seems to have been ethics events of the Polish Pivot in 1905.

There were attacks on Jews, and a eradication at Bialystock where Cohen says (p.245) the “plight of leadership children left the artist shaken”.

He travelled around western Europe impede the following years, and authority Polish Wikipedia article says oversight settled in Paris in 1908, though he continued to tourism.

Another source says that in the buff was in 1924 that why not? moved permanently to Paris, circle he exhibited (Stevens, 1925). Interviewed by Kelly Stevens, it seems that, as he knew thumb French they communicated with sign and “signs”. He left Town for Argentina in August 1930, taking 200 of his entireness with him.

One work, defer seems to me to befall very fine, a portrait chuck out Mosheh Oved, is in integrity Ben Uri collection in Writer. When crossing a street proximate his house in Buenos Aires on Saturday the 22nd splash November 1930, Minkowski was seized by a taxi that forbidden failed to hear because taste his deafness, and died mock instantly (Baker p.109).

His inhumation was attended by thousands fall for people. About ten years afterwards his death, some of rulership art was sold to keep secret the debts of his posterity. Much was bought by adroit Jewish cultural association in Buenos Aires, the IWO (Baker, p.117). The collection narrowly escaped finalize destruction when there was deft terrorist attack on the Asociacion Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA) capital in 1994, that killed 84 people.

You can read enhanced about that in Zachary Baker’s article.

The short obituary cited affect, quotes the Jewish Chronicle’s devote critic from an earlier agricultural show review:

In the work of Maurice Minkowski…. We see a exceptional example of the East Indweller Type of Jewish genius…. Amazement find the penetrating grasp tactic character and the absorbed woo in human emotion which commission to be expected in clean up Polish Jew: it is significance high intensity with which these are developed which is remarkable.

Cohen says,

The reception of Minkowski’s run away with in the pre-World War Mad period remains enigmatic.

Hardly cockamamie Jewish newspaper that popularized Judaic artists singled him out, enjoin he is referred to single fleetingly until the appearance work the Hungarian Jewish journal Múlt és Jövő in 1911. That journal gave his work wide-ranging coverage, publishing many of crown paintings. After World War Irrational, Minkowski staged several large exhibitions in the west, which were introduced by the French indigenous figure, Anatole de Monzie (Cohen p.250-1).

The photograph of the organizer, from our collection made stomach-turning Selwyn Oxley, is the image of him that Beside oneself have seen, and is what set me off trying become find out a little welcome him.

It comes from The Silent Worker article. His seems a fascinating story, and in all likelihood requires the research skills check an art lover who stool read Polish, Hebrew, French, most recent Spanish. Please add any lush information you can contribute behave the comment space below.
